Family violence and emotional intelligence in students of a private school in the district of Carabayllo, 2023

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the relationship between family violence and emotional intelligence in a sample of 126 secondary school students from a private school in the Carabayllo district in 2023. The research was quantitative, correlational, with a basic level, non-experimental, and cross-sectional. The Family Violence Questionnaire by Altamirano (2019) and the Bar-On Emotional Intelligence Inventory (reduced version), adapted and standardized in Peru by Ugarriza and Pajares (2005), were applied. The results showed that 96.8% (122) of the students were in a lower level of family violence, while 68.3% (86) were in the regular level of emotional intelligence. An inverse and low-intensity statistically significant relationship was found between the variables (p < .05; rs = -.260). The physical violence (p < .05; rs = -.288) and psychological violence (p < .05; rs = -.220) dimensions also showed significant, inverse, and low-intensity correlations with emotional intelligence.

Este estudio asumió como principal finalidad de precisar la existencia de una relación entre la violencia familiar y la inteligencia emocional en una muestra compuesta por 126 estudiantes de secundaria pertenecientes a un centro de instrucción privada del distrito de Carabayllo en el año 2023. Se caracterizó por tener un enfoque cuantitativo, correlacional, de nivel básico, no experimental y transversal. Para recoger la información se aplicó el Cuestionario de Violencia Familiar de Altamirano (2019) y el Inventario de Inteligencia Emocional de BarOn en su versión reducida, adecuado y estandarizado en Perú por Ugarriza y Pajares (2005). Los resultados mostraron que el 96.8% (122) de los educandos se posicionaron en un grado inferior de violencia familiar, frente al 68.3% (86) que se ubicaron en el grado regular de inteligencia emocional. Por lo tanto, se logró descubrir una relación de tipo inversa con una baja intensidad y estadísticamente relevante entre las variables (p < .05; rs = -.260). Por otro lado, las dimensiones violencia física (p < .05; rs = -.288) y la violencia psicológica (p < .05; rs = -.220) guardaron una correlación significativa, inversa y de baja intensidad con la inteligencia emocional.
