    Serum iron (Fe) and its relationship with hemoglobin (Hb) and hematocrit (Hct) provide important information about the anemic status in vulnerable populations such as elderly adults. The objective of the present study was to correlate serum iron with hemoglobin and hematocrit values in elderly adults from the nursing home “San Martín” in Lima. To this end, serum Fe, Hb, and Hct were determined using the Ferrozine, Cyanmethemoglobin, and microhematocrit methods, respectively, in 42 elderly adults of both sexes, with informed consent. The results obtained were as follows: serum iron levels were decreased in 38.1% of the population aged 70 to 79 years. Hemoglobin levels were decreased in 7.1% of women and 28.6% of men; by age group, a decrease was observed in 21.4% of individuals aged 70 to 79 years. Hematocrit was decreased in 42.9% of the population within the 70–79-year age group. When correlating the hematological parameters with serum iron using Pearson’s correlation test, values of -0.065 and -0.063 were obtained, indicating a negative linear relationship; therefore, no significant correlation exists between the parameters under study. It is concluded that serum iron does not necessarily decrease simultaneously with hemoglobin and hematocrit.
