Ítem Acceso abierto Efficacy of zinc in the treatment of acute diarrheal diseases in children.(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2018-01-27) Aguirre Gonzáles, Aída; Mendigure Fernandez, JulioObjective: To systematize the available evidence on the efficacy of zinc in children with acute diarrhea. Materials and Methods: This is a systematic review of 10 articles published in indexed journals over the past 10 years, available in the following databases: SciELO, Dialnet, Medline, and NCBI. A total of 10 articles were selected for final review, with 30% originating from Pakistan and 10% each from Ethiopia, India, Switzerland, Bolivia, Brazil, and Spain. Results: All (100%) of the reviewed articles demonstrate that the addition of zinc to the standard diarrhea management protocol reduced the duration of illness and the frequency of bowel movements. Additionally, 30% of the articles report a reduction in fecal output with zinc supplementation. However, 20% of the studies indicate that zinc supplementation increased vomiting, and another 20% highlight improved immune response in children receiving zinc. Conclusion: Zinc supplementation supports the recovery of children with diarrhea according to the reviewed scientific evidence.
