Using a descriptive method, information was collected through targeted surveys conducted in 66 pharmacies and drugstores, directed at the Technical Directors in charge. The results showed that 89.4% demonstrated a high level of knowledge regarding the handling of expired and deteriorated pharmaceutical products. For the normative dimension, a result of 71.2% indicated that the technical directors are familiar with the main regulations for handling these products. Regarding the second dimension, documentation, the result was 97%, with the policy of exchange being the most well-known and effective tool to prevent pharmaceutical products from expiring in pharmacies and drugstores. In conclusion, it is necessary to implement strategies to train, guide, coordinate, and disseminate proper disposal methods for expired and deteriorated pharmaceutical products to prevent environmental harm and risks to public health. It is recommended that health authorities implement comprehensive proposals to ensure the effective fulfillment of these processes.
