This term was coined in 1974 by Herbert J. Freudenberger, a psychoanalyst, in response to the intense professional lives of healthcare workers. This overload of stress jeopardizes their health, affecting their relationships in the workplace, and impacting them psychologically and mentally. As the condition progresses, it deteriorates mental faculties, leading individuals to feel worthless, causing confusion in the workplace and resulting in poor care for patients. Maslach and S. Jackson (1981) studied this syndrome as a situation in which an individual, as a person and as part of the psyche, reflects a state of anxiety or decline in their work. This syndrome is particularly prevalent among those who have caregiving roles, and it is described through three dimensions: emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and lack of personal accomplishment.
