Ítem Acceso abierto Level of knowledge and practice of the nursing staff of the sterilization center service on cleaning and disinfection of surgical material of a tertiary national hospital in Lima 2020(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2020-10-04) Arévalo Lozano, Katty Anita; Avila Vargas Machuca, Jeannette GiselleImproper cleaning of various devices used by patients leads to an increased prevalence and incidence of microorganism transmission, thus prolonging hospital stays. Therefore, it is essential to establish cleaning and disinfection protocols according to regulations and ministerial resolutions, along with strict supervision of compliance. The Sterilization Center is the backbone of sterilization processes, and the workers in this service must be knowledgeable about what they do and apply it in their daily tasks. They must educate external staff performing these processes at the point of use. This area is responsible for washing, disinfecting, preparing, packaging, sterilizing, storing, and distributing medical and non-medical instruments to service units. In the Sterilization Center of a third-level National Hospital in Lima, it has been observed that nursing staff, especially technicians, carry out washing and disinfection tasks routinely and empirically, without sufficient knowledge of cleaning and disinfection procedures, which affects the continuity of the sterilization processes and the safety of patients using these instruments.
