Ítem Restringido Risk of falls and its relationship with cognitive impairment in older adults at the Centro Medic Polyclinic, 2022(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2022-11-07) Balcázar Castillo, Oscar Alejandro; Vera Arriola, Juan AméricoThe number of older adults is expected to approach 25% of the population in our continent. Aging produces changes in strength, trophism, tone, balance, among others, which increase the risk of falls in older adults. Approximately 50% of older adults experience at least one fall per year, with nearly half falling more than once. In Latin America, the proportion of older adults who suffer falls annually is around 30%. Older adults also experience cognitive decline. Literature shows that this condition can increase the likelihood of disability, as well as increase mortality and healthcare utilization. Objective: To determine the relationship between cognitive decline and fall risk in older adults. An observational, correlational, and cross-sectional study was conducted with 85 older adults. The Tinetti Scale and Pfeiffer Questionnaire were used. Results: A higher proportion of female adults (51.8%) with an average age of 78 years. Most older adults were at low risk for falls (45.9%) and had normal cognitive function (45.9%). It was concluded that there is a statistically significant relationship between cognitive decline and fall risk (p=0.000).
