Agosto-diciembre, 2023(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2025-01-15) Bautista Chancos, Yessica; Sanchez Davila, Florile; Parreño Tipián, Juan ManuelThe objective was to identify the relationship between polypharmacy with the treatment of acute respiratory infections in older adults who go to the Kerofarma pharmacy in the Bellavista Callao district, Peru. August-December 2023. Methods: The study had a quantitative approach, cross sectional, non-experimental design, descriptive correlational scope, basic type, hypothetical deductive method, sample: 183 older adults, the data were collected through a survey with the use of a questionnaire, the hypothesis was tested using Chi square analysis. Results: Demographic data: 49.7% were between 60-65 years old; Regarding polypharmacy due to adverse reactions, 60.7% presented itching or skin rash, 67.2% had burning and/or stomach pain; sleep disturbances 63.3%; In self-medication, 68.3% were on their own initiative; In medication errors, 68.9% used medications only when they felt bad. In pharmacological treatment they used: beta-lactams 33.9%; macrolides 15.8%; sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim 19.1%; ibuprofen 30.1%; metamizole 16.4%; paracetamol 19.1%; diclofenac 38.3%; prednisone 21.9%; dexamethasone 44.3%; ambroxol 26.2%; dextromethorphan 30.1%; chlorphenamine 32.8%; cetirizine 37.2%; salbutamol 25.1%; clenbuterol 30.1%. 12.6% consumed between 5 to 6 medications; between 3-4 medications 4.4% and between 7-9 medications 2.7%. There was no significant difference between polypharmacy with the treatment of acute respiratory infections in older adults (p>0.05). Conclusion: There is no relationship between polypharmacy and the treatment of respiratory infections, since if polypharmacy increases it could increase adverse reactions, self-medication, medication errors, consequences in daily activities and reduce the effectiveness of the treatment of infections. acute respiratory.
