Ítem Acceso abierto Critical review: effect of oral nutritional supplementation on the nutritional status of adult patients with chronic kidney disease undergoing hemodialysis treatment(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2022-04-21) Benavente Grández, Bettyna; Bohórquez Medina, Andrea LisbetOral Nutritional Supplementation (ONS) is the administration of nutrients by mouth, in addition to the daily dietary intake, to increase a patient’s nutritional intake. This secondary research, titled "Effect of oral nutritional supplementation on the nutritional status of adult patients with chronic kidney disease on hemodialysis," aimed to critically review clinical studies related to the benefits of ONS on the nutritional status of CKD patients on hemodialysis who are malnourished or at risk of malnutrition. The clinical question was: What is the effect of oral nutritional supplementation on the nutritional status of patients with CKD on hemodialysis? The methodology used was Evidence-Based Nutrition (NuBE). Databases used included SCIENCE DIRECT, PUBMED, SCIELO, DIALNET, and REDALYC, finding 166 articles, 12 of which were selected and evaluated using the CASPE critical reading tool. The randomized controlled clinical trial titled "Effects of oral nutritional supplementation on the treatment of malnutrition in hospitalized and discharged patients in India: a randomized, open, controlled trial" was selected, with an evidence level A II and a strong recommendation grade. The critical commentary concluded that there is sufficient evidence to determine that ONS has positive effects on nutritional status indicators in CKD patients on hemodialysis, as supplementation improves the intake of macro and micronutrients.
