Ítem Acceso abierto Muscle mass and hospital stay in surgical and clinical patients at the Dos de Mayo National Hospital in December 2022.(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2023-12-05) Cabrera Algorta, Karoline Stephanie; Mauricio Alza, Saby MarisolProlonged hospital stays expose patients to a higher risk of adverse in-hospital events such as nosocomial infections, leading to longer stays and creating a vicious circle that results in increased morbidity, mortality, and high costs. Objective: To identify the relationship between muscle mass and hospital stay in surgical and clinical patients. Materials and Methods: Analytical, quantitative, prospective, and cross-sectional study. Anthropometric and clinical information was obtained from the surgery and medicine wards. Muscle mass was determined using portable BIA equipment (SECA). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results: A total of 137 hospitalized patients were included, with 56.9% having prolonged stays (greater than 9 days), and the male sex was predominant in both short and prolonged stays. Among surgical patients, 57.7% had prolonged stays, and among clinical patients, 55.9% had prolonged stays. Gastrointestinal diseases were the most prevalent with 33.3% among those with short stays, while cardiovascular diseases were found in 27.1% of those with prolonged stays. Conclusion: In this study population, greater weight loss was observed as the length of hospital stay increased, and the same trend was observed with muscle mass.
