The objective was to analyze the effect of omega-3 supplementation on reducing the risk of developing cardiovascular disease in adults with diabetes mellitus. The Evidence-Based Nutrition (NuBE) methodology was used. The information search was carried out in PUBMED, SCIENCE DIRECT, finding 165 articles, 11 being selected that have been evaluated by the CASPE critical reading tool, finally selecting the article “An omega-3 fatty acid plasma index ≥4% prevents progression of coronary artery plaque in patients with coronary artery disease on statin treatment”, which has a level of evidence A I and Grade of Strong Recommendation. In conclusion, supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids in doses between 1 to 4 g/day does not support the recommendations for use in people with diabetes mellitus and/or with a history of coronary heart disease for the prevention or reduction of fatal coronary heart disease. non-fatal myocardial infarction or any other cardiovascular event.
