    Association between biofilm formation and the production of extended-spectrum beta-lactamases in Escherichia coli isolated from urine culture at Hipólito Unanue National Hospital, January to June 2018

    The objective was to determine the association between biofilm formation and the production of extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBL) in Escherichia coli isolated from urine cultures at the Hipólito Unanue National Hospital from January to June 2018." A quantitative, observational, and cross-sectional study was conducted. The Jarlier method was used to demonstrate ESBL production, and the Tissue Culture Plate (TCP) method was used to assess biofilm formation. The variables were described using absolute and percentage frequencies, and the association between the variables was determined using the Chi-square test. Out of 190 Escherichia coli strains isolated from urine cultures, 48.9% produced ESBL and 73.2% were biofilm producers, with 58.3% weak, 30.2% moderate, and 11.5% strong biofilm formation.
