Ítem Acceso abierto Relationship between nutritional status and anemia in children aged 0-6 months and 6-12 months at the Hospital 11 E Banda de Shilcayo, January to March 2018(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2018-11-22) Castro Antunez, Julia Isabel; Lozada Urbano, Michelle FatimaChildren under 5 years old are a vulnerable group due to their rapid growth, development, physical activity, and response to infections. Proper nutrition is necessary to meet their requirements. The objective was to investigate if there is a correlation between nutritional status and anemia. The sample consisted of 78 children, 32 (41%) female and 46 (59%) male. Of the children evaluated, 38.5% presented anemia. According to their nutritional status, 3.8% had chronic malnutrition, 1.3% were underweight, 3.8% had acute malnutrition, and over 96% had normal nutritional status. The mean age was 7.12 months, the average hemoglobin level was 10.89 g/dL, and the average birth weight was 3.24 kg. It was concluded that there is a high prevalence of anemia in children, accounting for 73.3% of the cases. Hemoglobin levels were not correlated with any of the study variables. Anemia could be caused by low iron intake, late introduction of complementary foods, and insufficient consumption of iron-rich foods and foods that promote its absorption. Promoting healthy eating habits, such as introducing complementary foods at six months with iron-rich foods, continuing breastfeeding, and avoiding cow's milk during the first year of life, is essential.
