When combined with genetic predisposition and environmental factors, depression is more likely to develop. Although pregnancy is often regarded as a joyful time, it can also present mental health challenges, such as depression. The prevalence of depression during pregnancy is between 5-10% in international studies, affecting 10-15% of women and 5-12% of men. A study in a maternity ward in Peru found that 17% of mothers experienced depression, showing that perinatal depression is more prevalent than postpartum depression, which ranges from 8.1% to 9.1%.
