Ítem Acceso abierto Identification of mycobacterium tuberculosis by genexpert® MTB/RIF in pulmonary and extrapulmonary samples in adults from the Sergio E. Bernales National Hospital, Lima - Peru, 2022(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2022-11-27) Cotrina Gabriel, Carmen Isabel; Astete Medrano, Delia JessicaTuberculosis is an infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (the Koch bacillus). Microbiological culture remains the gold standard for diagnosing tuberculosis in all its forms; however, its disadvantage lies in the slow growth of the bacillus in culture media. The aim of this research was to determine the diagnostic validity of GeneXpert® MTB/RIF for identifying Mycobacterium tuberculosis in pulmonary and extrapulmonary samples from adults. A non-experimental, descriptive comparative study with a quantitative approach was conducted on 644 pulmonary and extrapulmonary samples. The study found a frequency of Mycobacterium tuberculosis of 17.7% in bacilloscopy, 24.8% in culture, and 27.8% with GeneXpert MTB/RIF. Sensitivity, specificity, Positive Predictive Value, and Negative Predictive Value were 95.6%, 94.6%, 85.4%, and 98.4%, respectively, when culture was used as the reference, and 97.4%, 87.2%, 62%, and 99.4%, respectively, when bacilloscopy was the reference. Conclusion: The GeneXpert MTB/RIF method showed high diagnostic validity and is a reliable technique for identifying Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
