    Effectiveness of a nursing educational intervention in prenatal and postnatal care for the continuation of exclusive breastfeeding

    Objective: To evaluate the evidence on the effectiveness of a nursing educational intervention during the pre and postnatal periods on exclusive breastfeeding in children up to 6 months of age. Methodology: This is a systematic review, with the search restricted to full-text articles, and the selected articles underwent critical reading. A total of 10 articles were selected, with 30% (3) corresponding to Spain, 30% (3) from Colombia, and 40% (4) from Cuba. The studies included one clinical trial (1), one systematic review (5), a correlational description (1), case-control studies (2), and one cohort study (1). Results: Maternal education during the prenatal stage, with greater emphasis on the postnatal stage, is effective in increasing the duration and exclusivity of breastfeeding during the 6 months following birth. In Gorrita’s study, educational interventions were effective, leading to better exclusive breastfeeding durations, lower morbidity, and higher weight and height percentiles for age in the intervention group. Conclusions: From the total number of articles analyzed, it is concluded that maternal education is effective in ensuring the continuation of exclusive breastfeeding.
