Ítem Acceso abierto Diagnostic value of visual inspection with acetic acid compared to cyto-histopathology in the early detection of cervical cancer at the Cytopathology Research Institute, Lima, Peru, 2022(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2023-09-03) Escriba Ogosi, Carmen Rosa; García Vásquez, Carlos HugoIntroduction: Cervical cancer (CC) ranks fourth in frequency and mortality worldwide and is a public health problem in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), where it is the second leading cause of death, accounting for 90% of deaths. The IVA and cervicovaginal cytology are easy-to-perform techniques used for the prevention and detection of CC, while histopathology provides the final diagnosis. Sensitivity, specificity, PPV, and NPV of IVA: 82%, 24%, 43%, and 65%; while for cervicovaginal cytology: 60%, 81%, 69%, and 74%. Conclusion: The Pap smear is a good option for CC prevention, as the obtained values were closer to cervix biopsy results, but its effectiveness depends on proper sample collection and frequent repetition.
