Ítem Acceso abierto Relationship of hemoglobin and corpuscular constants with the body mass index in children treated at the Surquillo maternal and child health center, period 2016 - 2018(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2020-02-10) Astochado Romero, Roel; Espíritu Pichiule, Hellen Carol; Borja Velezmoro, Gustavo AdolfoThe determination of hemoglobin levels with corpuscular constants, along with BMI, plays a very important role in the diagnosis of anemia. Objective: To analyze the relationship between hemoglobin, corpuscular constants, and body mass index (BMI) in children attended at the Surquillo Maternal and Child Health Center from 2016 to 2018. Methodology: The study was analytical, retrospective, cross-sectional, and non-experimental in design, consisting of 130 children aged 5 to 11 years. Results: The mean age was 8.1 years, with 50.77% being girls and the rest boys. According to BMI, malnutrition predominated in boys with 10.77%, and overweight was more common in girls with 11.54%. A total of 14.62% of the population had anemia. The highest prevalence of anemia was found in boys (21.9%), with the 5-7 years age group showing 66.7% of mild anemia and 50% of moderate anemia. Regarding corpuscular constants, the highest prevalence of microcytic and hypochromic anemia was in boys, with 23.4% and 31.3%, respectively. The greatest prevalence of microcytic hypochromic anemia according to age was also observed in the 5-7 years age group. Hemoglobin levels and their association with BMI showed that 50% of anemia cases in malnourished children had moderate anemia, and 40% in children with normal weight. For corpuscular constants according to BMI, 23.1% of cases of microcytic anemia were found in obese children, and 30.67% had hypochromic anemia. Conclusion: Hemoglobin levels and MCHC have a direct relationship with BMI, with no statistically significant association with other corpuscular constants.
