Materials and methods: The approach was quantitative, with a hypothetical-deductive method, non-experimental, cross-sectional, and prospective. The study involved 283 students. The technique used was a survey, and questionnaires were applied and validated by expert judgment. Results: It was found that the global empathetic orientation variable was 84.5% of students, with a medium level. Regarding the academic factor, 72.2% of the students did not choose Dentistry as their first option, and 83% did not fail any subject more than once. On the other hand, significant differences were found regarding marital status and academic semester in relation to empathy. There was also a significant relationship between choosing Dentistry as the first option and empathy. Conclusion: There is a relationship between some sociodemographic and academic factors, but no significant relationship with the family aspect.
