Ítem Acceso abierto Intrinsic and extrinsic factors that determine falls in the elderly(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2017) Fernández Solórzano, Sofía Ivone; Huallanca De la Cruz, Katia Del Pilar; Gómez Gonzales, Walter EdgarObjective: To identify the intrinsic and extrinsic factors that determine falls in the elderly. Materials and Methods: Systematic observational and retrospective review, with a restriction to full-text articles. The selected articles underwent critical reading using the Jover evaluation to identify their level of evidence. Results: In the final selection, 9 articles were chosen. We found that 33.3% (3) were from Mexico, 22.2% (2) were from Spain and Cuba respectively, while 11.1% (1) were from Brazil and Peru. The study included a systematic review from Spain and a cohort study from Brazil, both constituting 11.1%. 33.3% of the studies were case-control studies from Spain, Mexico, and Cuba. The remaining 44.4% were descriptive studies from Cuba, Mexico, and Peru. Conclusions: The research demonstrated that intrinsic risk factors associated with falls accounted for 90%, with the primary risk factors being age over 80 years, gait disorders, physical and cognitive impairments, fear of falling due to previous incidents, and vascular diseases. As for extrinsic factors, accounting for 10%, slippery floors and home infrastructure were the primary contributors to fall risks.
