Ítem Acceso abierto Effectiveness of oral hygiene with chlorhexidine in patients with endotracheal tubes for the prevention of pneumonia associated with mechanical ventilation(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2017-07-02) Flores Llorca, Susan Lizbeth; Herrera Montoya, Jonathan Ronald; Rivera Lozada de Bonilla, OrianaMetodology: This is a systematic review, with information gathered from the following databases: PubMed, Medline, Cochrane, Scielo, Dialnet, and Google Scholar. A total of 15 articles were included in the final selection, with 33.3% from Spain, 20% from Chile, and 46.7% from China, Belgium, the United States, Brazil, the United Kingdom, Iran, and India. Results: Of the total articles analyzed, 93% demonstrate that oral hygiene with chlorhexidine is effective in preventing ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP), while 7% highlight a gap in knowledge due to a lack of studies proving its effectiveness. It was found that chlorhexidine oral hygiene with a concentration of 0.12% is effective, and it is significantly more effective as an antimicrobial agent than other solutions such as Pérsica, Mátrica, sodium bicarbonate, and saline solution. 20% of the articles suggest that oral hygiene should be performed every 12 hours for at least 30 seconds, while 10% of studies identify the need for oral hygiene four times a day. Conclusion: Oral hygiene with chlorhexidine is effective in preventing ventilator-associated pneumonia.
