    Critical review: effect of omega-3 fish oil on the nutritional status of patients with ulcerative colitis

    Fish oil and omega-3 are nutrients that have been associated with a range of health benefits, including improved nutritional status in patients with ulcerative colitis. The question was: “Does nutritional intervention with omega-3 fish oil improve the nutritional status of patients with ulcerative colitis?” To answer this, the Evidence-Based Nutrition (NuBE) methodology was applied, and a critical review of the literature was conducted. A critical analysis was performed on a randomized clinical trial titled “Comparison of the effect of omega-3 inclusion in the treatment regimen in elderly patients with ulcerative colitis with placebo: a randomized clinical trial,” which has a high evidence level and strong recommendation grade. The supplementation with omega-3 was found to positively impact the nutritional status of patients with ulcerative colitis by improving nutrient absorption, reducing inflammation and oxidative stress, and promoting healing.
