    Complicaciones metabólicas y hepáticas en recién nacidos quirúrgicos que reciben nutrición parenteral en la unidad de cuidado intensivo neonatal. Instituto Pediátrico Especializado – Lima 2021–2022

    Method: This was a quantitative, observational, descriptive, cross-sectional, and retrospective study. Results: A total of 56 newborns who met the inclusion criteria were enrolled. Of these, 55.4% (31/56) were female; 60.7% (34/56) weighed 2500 grams or more; and 73.2% (41/56) were full-term (gestational age ≥37 weeks). The most frequent conditions requiring parenteral nutrition (PN) were congenital heart disease (23.2%), anorectal malformation (21.4%), esophageal atresia (19.6%), and intestinal atresia (12.5%). Complications occurred in 67.9% (38/56) of patients, with some experiencing more than one. The most common metabolic complications were hypophosphatemia (35.5%), hypertriglyceridemia (30.1%), hyponatremia (12.3%), and hyperkalemia (11.0%). Liver disease developed in 34.6% (9/26) of patients who received PN for more than 14 days. Conclusion: Among newborns with surgical conditions receiving PN, 67.9% experienced metabolic and/or hepatic complications. The most frequent metabolic complications were hypophosphatemia, hypertriglyceridemia, and hyponatremia. Cholestasis was observed in 34.6% of patients.
