Ítem Acceso abierto The effectiveness of the use of the enema in patients who require treatment or diagnostic tests(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2022-03-27) Guillen Cajahuaringa de Atusparia, Delia; Fernández Rengifo, Werther FernandoObjective: To systematize the evidence on the effectiveness of enema use in patients who require it for treatment or diagnostic tests. Materials and Methods: A systematic, observational, and retrospective review of a quantitative nature, subject to critical selection, using the Grade evaluation system to establish the level of evidence. The data were located in the following databases: Scielo, Researchgate, Sciencedirect, Epistemonikos, PubMed. Of the 10 articles systematically reviewed, 40% (n=4/10) were systematic reviews, and 60% (n=6/10) were randomized controlled trials. According to the results obtained from the systematic review conducted in the present study, from the following countries: South Korea (10%), Spain (10%), Cuba (10%), Australia (10%), Chile (10%), Italy (10%), USA (10%), England (10%), Argentina (10%), and Israel (10%). Results: Of the evidence found, 60% (n=6/10) (18, 19, 20, 21, 24, 25) indicate that the use of enema is effective for the treatment of various diseases. 20% (n=2/10) (22, 26) suggest that water-based enemas are more effective than phosphate-based ones in reducing adverse effects in the treatment of constipation. 10% (n=1/10) (23) indicate that the use of enema is not effective in reducing the rate of perinatal infection during labor. Another 10% (n=1/10) (17) state that the use of coffee-based enema is effective for preparation in video endoscopy. Conclusion: The use of enemas based on polyethylene glycol, sucralfate, phosphate, and water (saline) is effective and is recommended for the treatment of various diseases and diagnostic tests.
