    Effectiveness of dental brushing in patients with mechanical ventilation in the intensive care unit

    Based on the systematic review, this research is composed of scientific articles obtained from the PubMed, Scielo, and Google Scholar databases, which were critically analyzed to determine the level of evidence. A total of 15 articles were included in the classification. Of these, 20% are from the U.S., 20% from Brazil, 20% from the U.K., and 40% from Canada, Europe, and China. Results: Of the total articles, 80% state that dental brushing does not significantly reduce ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) and had no impact on mortality or the duration of stay in intensive care units (ICU). 20% report that the use of chlorhexidine is beneficial in reducing VAP, being more effective when used specifically for Gram-negative microorganisms. It is recommended to use dental brushing for ventilated patients alongside 0.12% chlorhexidine.
