Ítem Acceso abierto Effective interventions to prevent urinary tract infections associated with the use of urinary catheters in hospitalized patients(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2017) Sotomayor Yauri, Adolfo Oriol; Huerta Valencia, Rosa Yannet; Mendigure Fernandez, JulioObjective: To systematize available evidence on effective interventions for preventing urinary tract infections associated with the use of Foley catheters in hospitalized patients. Materials and Methods: Systematic review, observational, and retrospective, limited to full-text articles, and critically evaluated using the Grade system to assess the quality and strength of evidence. Results: A total of 10 articles were selected, with 30% from Colombia, 20% from Spain, 40% from Brazil, and 10% from Portugal. Most of the studies were systematic reviews (60%), with case-control studies from Spain and Colombia. The remaining 10% were descriptive, comparative, and case-control studies. 60% (n=6/10) of the studies indicated that the most effective intervention was the implementation and application of protocols for catheter installation, considering materials, biosafety measures, and proper application procedures. 40% (n=4/10) found that prolonged use and improper handling of the Foley catheter increased urinary tract infection incidence. Conclusions: Effective interventions for preventing urinary tract infections associated with Foley catheter use include the implementation and application of protocols for catheter installation, considering biosafety measures, appropriate materials, and catheter removal timelines.
