Ítem Acceso abierto Impact of malocclusions on self-esteem and the need for orthodontic treatment in adolescent patients treated at the ODAM dental clinic, Lima 2021.(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2022-04-05) Izaguirre Arregui, Carolina de las Mercedes; Céspedes Porras, JacquelineThe aim of this research was to determine the impact of malocclusions on self-esteem and the need for orthodontic treatment in adolescent patients attended at the ODAM dental clinic, Lima, 2021. A quantitative, descriptive, and cross-sectional study design was used. The sample consisted of 93 patients aged 11 to 14 years, who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The Dental Aesthetic Index (DAI) was used to measure the severity of malocclusions and the clinical need for orthodontic treatment, the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES) was used to measure self-esteem, and the Aesthetic Component (AC) of the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN) was used to measure the need for orthodontic treatment according to the patient's perception. The results showed that most patients had some degree of malocclusion, with severe malocclusion being the most prevalent (67.7%). In terms of the distribution of malocclusion severity by age, very severe malocclusions were most commonly found at ages 13 and 14, and in terms of gender, malocclusions were more prevalent in females. Regarding self-esteem, two-thirds of the sample had high (46.2%) or medium (24.7%) self-esteem, while only 29.0% had low self-esteem. No statistically significant relationship was found between the severity of malocclusions and self-esteem level (p=0.809, p>0.05), nor between the severity of malocclusions and the need for orthodontic treatment as perceived by the adolescent patients (p=0.083, p>0.05).
