Relación entre polifarmacia y reacciones adversas medicamentosas en pacientes hospitalizados en el servicio de cirugía de tórax, corazón y vascular periférica, del Hospital Edgardo Rebagliati Martins–EsSalud en el periodo de marzo–mayo de 2013

This study monitored adverse drug reactions (ADRs) in hospitalized patients from the Thoracic, Cardiac, and Peripheral Vascular Surgery Service at Hospital Edgardo Rebagliati Martins–EsSalud between March and May 2013. It was designed as an observational, cross-sectional, descriptive, and prospective study, including 127 patients. The objectives were to examine the relationship between polypharmacy and ADRs, to identify ADRs according to sex and age, and to determine the pharmacological groups and specific drugs most frequently involved. ADRs were classified according to severity and the affected organ system, and causality was assessed. The results indicated that men between 56 and 74 years were the most affected. The pharmacological groups most frequently associated with ADRs were nitrates, statins, loop diuretics, and NSAIDs, with the most implicated drugs being isosorbide, atorvastatin, furosemide, metamizole, diclofenac, and paracetamol. Moderate reactions were predominant, and the majority of ADRs were classified as probable according to causality assessment. The most affected organ systems were cardiovascular and gastrointestinal, with additional metabolic disorders observed. In conclusion, ADRs were more common in older male patients receiving multiple medications, underscoring the need for pharmacovigilance and preventive strategies in surgical hospital services.
