    Factores asociados a la automedicación en adultos mayores y enfermedades frecuentes de la casa hogar San Martin de Porres Cercado de Lima – Perú. Junio–setiembre 2019

    This research relates factors associated with self-medication in older adults and common diseases at the "San Martin De Porres" nursing home, Cercado de Lima – Peru, from June–September 2019; this was its objective. The investigative sample consisted of 100 older adults. The methodology was descriptive, cross-sectional-correlational. Results show that 77% of the sample self-medicated. The conclusions are: those with an incomplete primary education level self-medicated at 100%, while those with a higher-than-secondary education level reached 33.3%. Delays and poor care at health centers accounted for 84.4% of reasons, and when facing health problems, 45.5% turned to a neighbor/friend. 63.6% of the population who self-medicate do so very sporadically, and 58.4% obtain medications at a pharmacy or drugstore. The main diseases or symptoms leading to self-medication were: bodily pain (35.1%), joint pain (26.0%), and digestive pain (18.2%). Influential media included: Radio (48.1%) and television (27.3%). People who advised self-consumption were: family (42.9%) and neighbors or friends (40.3%). Older adults unaware of the consequences of self-medication increased self-consumption by 80.5%, while those who were aware decreased it to 53.8%, with a significance of p=0.033, evidencing that self-medication is associated with knowledge of its consequences.
