In that way, Reading is not only the principal tool for students’ progress in their purpose of acquired knowledge and understand it, but it is also used in schools for the systematic study of content and knowledge. It is also used within daily life as a means to inform, entertain, think critically, investigate or deepen issues inherent in humanity. This is how conceptual maps have become an indispensable tool to cover it at all levels of understanding: Literal, Inferential and Critical - Intertextual. Based on the above, this thesis has the main purpose to determine the relationship that exists between the use of conceptual maps and the reading comprehension of the ninth grade students from Nuestra Señora de Fátima high school of Jordán municipality in Santander, in 2016. The type of research was applied, of experimental design and quantitative approach. For this research, a sample of 24 ninth grade students from the Nuestra Señora de Fátima high school was taken. It was in the municipality of Jordán Sube, Santander, and they were enrolled in 2016. In this thesis the hypothesis was contrasted through the use of a correlational design. In this research, the results showed that the use of conceptual maps influenced positively in the academic performance from the reading comprehension of students linked to this work. Before the intervention, 33.33% of students (8 students) presented a low performance and after the intervention it was reduced to 4.17% (1 student). 66.67% of students (16 students) presented a basic academic performance before the intervention and after the intervention it was able to increase to 79.17% (19 students). In the high performance was achieved an increase of 16.67% (4 students). In the superior performance, there was not any progress made. The results showed an improvement in academic performance in the reading comprehension course, since they compared the before results and the after results the intervention, we noticed an increase in the average number of students. After the use of the concept maps in the classroom, only one student presented low average academic performance and in addition about 50% of the students managed to achieve better performances. A direct and significant relationship was evidenced between the two variables: use of a conceptual map and reading comprehension. Among the main results, it was determined that there is a relationship between the use of the conceptual map and reading comprehension in ninth grade students of Nuestra Señora de Fatima High School in the municipality of Jordán Sube, since the result of the Pearson correlation was (r = 0.638 and p = 0.001).
