Ítem Acceso abierto Caffeine and total sugars in energy drinks sold in supermarkets in Chosica,2023(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2024-06-05) Muñoz Castillo, José Manuel; Espinoza Rado, Erika PaolaEnergy drinks are very popular among young people. Their main ingredients include caffeine and sugar, but previous studies have shown differences between the amount of caffeine and total sugars in the product compared to the amount declared on the label. Methodology: The study population included 10 energy drinks. Two data collection forms were used. Results: Regarding caffeine, it ranged from 28.95 to 78.48 mg/100ml, with 50% exceeding the maximum caffeine limit (>35mg/100ml), and 80% exceeding the declared value on the label. Regarding total sugars, it ranged from 0 to 9.50 g/100ml, with 60% exceeding the maximum sugar range in drinks (≥5g/100ml). Conclusion: Energy drinks contain high amounts of caffeine and total sugars, exceeding the values set by NTP 103.003.2022 and Law No. 30021. Most also do not comply with the declared content on the label, with the Monster Energy Ultra Sugar-Free drink being the most concerning as it contains four times more caffeine than indicated.
