Ítem Acceso abierto Critical review: nutritional supplementation with selenium and/or vitamin “E“ in the functional improvement of the patient with prostate cancer(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2020-12-10) Oscátegui Pérez, Raúl Gustavo; Bohórquez Medina, Sofia LorenaThe critical review presented below is titled: “Nutritional supplementation with Selenium and/or Vitamin E in the functional improvement of patients with Prostate Cancer”, which aimed to identify whether nutritional supplements such as selenium and/or vitamin E decrease the risk of prostate cancer in people over 45 years of age. The clinical question was: Can nutritional supplementation with Selenium and/or vitamin E produce any functional improvement in the patient with prostate cancer? The Evidence-Based Nutrition (NuBE) methodology was used. The information search was carried out in PUBMED/ MEDLINE, SCIELO, SCOPUS, SCIENCE DIRECT and WOS, 50 articles were found, 09 were selected that have been evaluated by the CASPE critical reading tool, finally selecting the systematic review and meta-analysis entitled: “ The association between Selenium and Prostate Cancer: a Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis”, which has a level of evidence A I and a high Grade of Recommendation. The critical commentary allowed us to conclude that selenium most likely has a protective role in the development of prostate cancer and its progression in advanced stages, which is why the administration of selenium supplements can be proposed for the prevention of prostate cancer. Unlike what was found with vitamin E supplementation, in which high doses could be associated with a greater risk of general mortality, taking into account that the daily amount can be easily obtained through diet.
