Ítem Acceso abierto Frequency of urinary tract infections and antibiotic resistance profile in adult patients diagnosed with COVID-19 from the Biolab & Inmunomed laboratory, Lima, 2021(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2023-08-13) Pérez Chira, Alicia Isabel; Astete Medrano, Delia JessicaCOVID-19 patients may develop bacterial or fungal infections during their hospital stay, increasing morbidity and mortality rates. The objective of this study was to determine the frequency of urinary tract infections and antibiotic resistance profiles in adult patients with COVID-19 diagnosed at Biolab & Inmunomed laboratory in Lima, 2021. A descriptive, cross-sectional study was designed with 124 urine cultures. Patients of both sexes aged over 18 years, with positive urine culture and antibiogram results, were included. Results showed that the average age was 55.5 ± 13.4 years (range 21-85), with 69.4% being male. Of the 33% with positive urine cultures, 53.7% were Candida sp, 22% Escherichia coli, and 17.1% Klebsiella pneumoniae. High yeast prevalence was noted in COVID-19 patients. The most frequent bacterial resistance was to ampicillin, cefazolin, cefotaxime, cefuroxime, ceftriaxone, sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim, amoxicillin-clavulanic acid, and nalidixic acid. In conclusion, urinary tract infections occurred in 33% of patients with a broad antibiotic resistance profile and a high proportion of Candida species in adult COVID-19 patients at Biolab & Inmunomed, Lima, 2021.
