Ítem Acceso abierto Relationship between functional capacity and the risk of falls in older adults.(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2015) Dávila Castro, Lynda Isabella; Palacios Orellana, Gelin Luz; Chávez Cachay, EstherObjective: To determine the relationship between functional capacity and the risk of falls among older adults from the Congregation Hijos de Nuestra Señora de la Piedad in the Breña district. Materials and methods: Quantitative, descriptive, correlational, cross-sectional study. The population consisted of 40 older adults aged 60 and over, between April and May 2015. The instruments used to evaluate functional capacity were the Barthel and Lawton & Brody scales. To assess the risk of falls, the Tinetti scale was used. Results: Female participants predominated. The age ranged from 60 to 80 years, with a higher percentage among those aged 80 or more. In the fall risk evaluation, 50% were found to be at high risk of falls. In relation to functional capacity, 72.5% had moderate dependence for basic daily activities. For instrumental activities, 57.5% and 20% showed moderate and severe dependence, respectively. It was found that the relationship between functional capacity and fall risk is statistically significant (p = 0.001). Conclusion: There is a direct relationship between functional capacity (basic and instrumental daily activities) and fall risk among older adults from the Congregation Hijos de Nuestra Señora de la Piedad.
