Ítem Acceso abierto Presence of Titillating Cells in Urinary Sediment and Its Relationship with the Diagnosis of Acute Pyelonephritis in Patients Attended at the Urology Service of Daniel Alcides Carrión National Hospital in May – June 2017(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2018-04-03) Alegría Ruiz, Ciro; Quispe Medina, Vivian Nataly; Plasencia Vega, César AugustoAcute pyelonephritis, considered the third most important bacterial infection statistically, is the most significant disease in renal pathology. The Sternheimer and Malbin staining technique provided a simple and accessible means for diagnosing pyelonephritis, where titillating cells—polymorphonuclear leukocytes containing cytoplasmic granules that exhibit Brownian motion—can be observed. The objective of the research was to determine if there is a direct relationship between the presence of titillating cells in urine sediment and the diagnosis of acute pyelonephritis. A descriptive, prospective, cross-sectional study was conducted. Samples were obtained from patients in the Urology service at the Daniel Alcides Carrión National Hospital. A total of 206 samples were analyzed using Sternheimer-Malbin staining. Forty-seven samples tested positive for titillating cells, and 32 of these (100%) were related to acute pyelonephritis. Based on the results of titillating cells and acute pyelonephritis, the Chi-square test was performed to assess the association between these two variables, yielding a p-value < 0.05 and a 95% confidence level, concluding that there is an association between both results.Ítem Acceso abierto Prevalence of Impaired Fasting Glucose and Its Relationship with Basal Insulin Levels in Patients Aged 5 to 15 Years Attending a Polyclinic in Surco from January to June 2016(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 1905-07-09) Gil Saavedra, Margarita Patricia; Plasencia Vega, César AugustoObjective: To determine the prevalence of altered fasting glucose and its relationship with basal insulin levels in patients aged 5 to 15 years attending a clinic in Surco from January to June 2016. Materials and Methods: Descriptive, cross-sectional, retrospective, quantitative study. The results of fasting glucose and insulin tests from 179 patients were obtained. The data collection instrument was the hospital system database, which was then entered into the Microsoft Office Excel 2010 program for statistical analysis. Variables: Two variables were studied: fasting glucose and basal insulin levels in patients aged 5 to 15 years. Results: The correlation coefficient between altered fasting glucose and insulin was -0.495. The prevalence of altered fasting glucose was 6.7%. The distribution of the population according to their altered fasting glucose levels and age group was as follows: 3 patients (1.7%) aged 5 to 8 years, 6 patients (3.3%) aged 9 to 12 years, and 3 patients (1.7%) aged 13 to 15 years. According to sex, the prevalence in females was 7 (3.9%) and in males was 5 (2.8%). Regarding the results of basal insulin, all patients had values within the reference range, with a wide data dispersion observed (coefficient of variation 13.9%). Conclusions: The prevalence of altered fasting glucose was 6.7%. No direct and statistically significant relationship was found with basal insulin levels (Pearson r: -0.495). It was observed that females had a higher number of patients with altered fasting glucose results, possibly due to age-related hormonal changes. A wide distribution of basal insulin values was observed. Recommendations: It is recommended to conduct further studies in Peru with children and adolescent populations to gather more data on basal insulin and compare it with other studies. Additionally, reference values for insulin in Peruvian children and adolescents should be studied to obtain data for our population.Ítem Acceso abierto Relationship between anemia and academic performance in children aged 6 to 12 years at Educational Institution 5130 – 4 Chavinillo, Ventanilla, Callao in 2015(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 1905-07-07) Guardia Rodriguez, Lusmila Edith; Valverde Heredia, Yulieta; Plasencia Vega, César AugustoDespite numerous policies and social programs promoted by the government to eradicate malnutrition, anemia remains a significant issue in our country. The aim was to determine the relationship between anemia and school performance at the Chavinillo-Ventanilla Educational Institution. The research was a quantitative, descriptive, cross-sectional, and correlational study. 100 children aged 6 to 12 years from 1st to 6th grade were studied. Samples were taken and processed at the clinical laboratory of the Norbert Wiener University. The results show a relationship between the described variables, indicating a significant relationship between poor performance and children with anemia. However, no significant relationship was found between regular or poor performance and children with anemia. Conclusion: Although the correlation between anemia and poor school performance is direct and positive, there are also determining factors. In our study, it was observed that mothers with primary education were a major factor influencing the children's performance. The goal of eradicating anemia is possible, but it requires commitment from the national government and local authorities.Ítem Acceso abierto Relationship Between Cockcroft-Gault Equations and 24-Hour Urinary Creatinine Clearance in Adults at a Hospital in Callao from January to March 2016(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2018-09-21) Espinoza Ibañez, Carmen del Rosario; Narro Allende, Jimmy José; Plasencia Vega, César AugustoThe objective was to determine the relationship between the Cockcroft-Gault equations and creatinine clearance in 24-hour urine in adults from a hospital in Callao during the period from January to March 2016. The correlation between these laboratory methods for all patients was moderate, with a significance level lower than the expected significance level. Women aged 18-30 had a weak correlation, women aged 31-64 had a weak correlation, and women aged 65 and older had a weak correlation. Men aged 18-30 had a weak correlation, men aged 31-64 had a moderate correlation, and men aged 65 and older had a moderate correlation. All the cases mentioned showed a significant difference. This study determined a low correlation between the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) using the Cockcroft–Gault equation and the creatinine clearance equation.
