Ítem Acceso abierto Effectiveness of ethylene oxide sterilization method in thermosensitive medical devices(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2017-11-12) Quiroz Torres, Lucy Marlene; Quispe Alcas, Rocío; Calsin Pacompia, WilmerObjectives: To systematize the evidence on the effectiveness of the ethylene oxide sterilization method for heat-sensitive medical devices. Materials and Methods: This is a systematic review of articles found in PubMed, Lilacs, Medline, Elsevier, and WorldWideScience, which underwent critical reading and were analyzed using the GRADE system to identify their level of evidence. According to the results obtained from the systematic review, of the total 10 articles reviewed, 50% (5) are from Brazil, 20% (2) are from the USA, 10% (1) is from Cuba, 10% (1) is from Japan, and 10% (1) is from Portugal. In terms of research study type, 60% (6) are experimental studies, 10% (1) is a systematic review, 10% (1) is a clinical experimental study, and 20% (2) are literature reviews. Results: 100% of the articles indicate that ethylene oxide is an effective sterilizing agent for heat-sensitive medical devices and materials. Conclusions: Of the 10 articles reviewed, 100% (n=10/10) show that the ethylene oxide sterilization method is effective for heat-sensitive medical devices due to its bactericidal, virucidal, fungicidal, and sporicidal properties, as well as its high penetrability and compatibility with most materials.
