Ítem Acceso abierto Effectiveness of nursing care in patients with urinary catheter for the decrease of complications in the emergency service(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2019-06-30) Rivas Giles, Ita; Rivera Lozada de Bonilla, OrianaObjective: To systematize evidence on the effectiveness of nursing care in patients with urinary catheters to reduce complications in the emergency department. Materials and Methods: Based on the results obtained from the systematic review conducted in this study, among the 10 systematically reviewed articles, 60% (n=6/10) are systematic reviews, 10% (n=1/10) are pre-experimental trials, 10% (n=1/10) are case-control studies, 10% (n=1/10) are cross-sectional/analytical studies, and 10% (n=1/10) are cohort studies. The studies reviewed are from the following countries: USA (30%), Spain (30%), Brazil (10%), Portugal (10%), Mexico (10%), and Cuba (10%). Results: The evidence found demonstrates that 100% (n=10/10) show that proper hygiene techniques during urinary catheter placement reduce the rate of urinary tract infections and complications. Conclusion: This systematic review highlights that nursing care is highly effective in reducing complication rates in patients with urinary catheters. This work should be accompanied by a protocol implemented by nursing staff, based on their specific work needs and focused on reducing complication rates for patients with urinary catheters. Continuous updates should be adopted by healthcare personnel to consistently improve their knowledge.
