Publicación Acceso abierto Evaluación de calcio sérico como predictor de osteoporosis y osteomalacia en personas de la tercera edad de la casa hogar San Martín. Lima 2017(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2020-06-04) Aldana Lázaro, Olger Maycol; Saire Zosaya, Sonia Elida; Parreño Tipián, Juan ManuelThe Objective of the research was to evaluate serum calcium values as a predictor of osteoporosis and osteomalacia in older adults at the San Martin Nursing Home, Lima, 2017. Materials and methods: The serum calcium concentration was determined for a sample of 71 individuals using the colorimetric method via UV/Visible spectrophotometry. A descriptive, cross-sectional method and a correlational design were utilized. Results: Of the 71 individuals, 83.1% were found to have decreased serum calcium. By gender, a higher percentage of decreased serum calcium was found in the female gender (100%). Individuals in the 60 to 69 age range showed the highest incidence of decreased serum calcium (100%). Decreased serum calcium percentages increased with unhealthy habits and decreased with healthy habits. Finally, diet showed that 63.3% of people with an intermediate dietary level presented decreased calcium values, and this condition worsened up to 97.6% in individuals with an inadequate diet. Conclusion: No relationship exists between decreased calcium and age. However, gender, lifestyle, and diet are related to decreased calcium.
