Ítem Acceso abierto Beliefs in oral health and oral hygiene practices of caregivers of older adults in nursing homes, Chaclacayo, 2021.(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2022-05-17) Santos Landeo, Magdalena; Vilchez Bellido, DinaOlder adults experience functional deterioration and a high prevalence of chronic diseases, increasing their need for care and elevating their level of dependence, requiring others to perform their daily basic activities, including taking care of their oral health. This responsibility is carried out in nursing homes by staff referred to as caregivers. If oral health care is not a priority for caregivers, it may influence poor oral care practices for the elderly under their care. The aim of this research was to relate oral health beliefs and oral hygiene practices among caregivers of older adults in nursing homes in Chaclacayo, 2021. An observational and relational study was conducted using a questionnaire that includes caregiver characteristics, oral hygiene practices with the elderly, and the Nursing Dental Coping Belief Scale (nDCBS), a Likert-type questionnaire to measure caregivers' oral health beliefs, in a sample of 47 caregivers from nursing homes. Descriptive and inferential statistics were performed using Chi-square, Student's t-test, and the Wilcoxon test (p ≤ 0.05 as significant). The results indicate that there is no relationship between oral health beliefs and oral hygiene practices of caregivers of older adults (p=0.119); incorrect beliefs were evident among caregivers, however, oral hygiene practices were correct. It is concluded that there is no relationship between oral health beliefs and oral hygiene practices of caregivers of older adults in nursing homes in Chaclacayo.
