Results: 10 articles have been identified that examine methods or strategies on how to communicate with patients on mechanical ventilation without sedation, of which 5 mention verbal communication is the best option in its use and accessibility, 4 of them mention that it can be complemented with additional tools and another 5 mention that it can be helped with devices that allow verbal communication. Conclusion: The most commonly used methods were: use of gestures and body movements, in addition to the use of materials such as pencil, paper, sheets with the alphabet and images, use of sounds or lights; but due to its effectiveness, it must be used with augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) tools, as well as staff must be trained in the use of these various types of communication.
