Effectiveness of hydrogels for the treatment of pressure ulcers in stage II, III, IV in elderly adults
(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2017-12-03) Tolmos Valdivia, Elizabeth Anna del Rosario; Vargas Huamán, Nancy Elizabeth; Gamarra Bustillos, Carlos
Objectives: To systematize the evidence on the efficacy of hydrogels in the treatment of pressure ulcers in elderly patients. Materials and Methods: Systematic review, meta-analysis, and retrospective study. The databases used were Pubmed, Medline, Elsevier, and Scielo. The search was restricted to full-text articles, and the selected articles were critically reviewed using Jover’s evaluation to determine their level of evidence. Results: A total of 9 articles were selected, with 45% (4/9) from the United Kingdom and 55% (5/9) from Spain, Ireland, Brazil, Turkey, and the U.S. Of the articles analyzed, 90% affirm that the use of hydrogels in treating pressure ulcers (PU) is effective and more cost-effective than traditional treatment, while only 10% of the studies found a slight superiority of foam dressings compared to hydrogels. Conclusions: Hydrogel treatment for stage II, III, IV PU promotes autolytic debridement, facilitates healing by promoting faster epithelialization, and its effectiveness is also determined by comparison with other products, its low cost, and the short time required for the healing process.
