Ítem Acceso abierto Effect of the use of probiotics in the management of stress and depression in adults(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2022-04-28) Uriarte Sánchez, Edward Josehp; Bohórquez Medina, Andrea LisbetProbiotics are live microorganisms that provide health benefits. Depression is a very common pathology that could cause emotional as well as physical problems. Recent research has shown a significant bidirectional communication called the gut-brain axis, as well as a relationship between the alteration of the enteric microbiome and psychiatric disorders, which would allow for further studies and the proposal of alternative therapies. The clinical question was: What is the effect of using probiotics in managing stress and depression in adults? The information search was carried out in PUBMED, SCOPUS, SCIENCE DIRECT, and EMBASE, finding 150 articles, of which 21 were selected and evaluated by the CASPE critical reading tool, selecting the Randomized Clinical Trial: “Probiotic consumption relieved human stress and anxiety symptoms possibly via modulating the neuroactive potential of the gut microbiota”, which has a level of evidence I and Grade of Recommendation I, according to the researcher's expertise. The critical commentary concluded that the use of probiotics to alleviate depressive symptoms is promising, mainly due to their potential anti-inflammatory effect, but additional double-blind randomized clinical trials and more rigorous studies are needed to support such conclusions.
