Ítem Acceso abierto Tai chi prevents and reduces falls in elderly people(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2022-01-16) Aipaja Pumalloclla, Ysabel; Urteaga Aragón, Delis Elizabeth; Pretell Aguilar, Rosa MariaObjective: To systematize the evidence on Tai Chi exercise to prevent and reduce falls in older adults.Materials and Methods: Observational, retrospective, systematic review of a quantitative nature, subject to critical selection, using the Grade evaluation system to establish the level of evidence, located in the following databases: Researchgate, Sciencedirect, Epistemonikos, and PubMed. Of the 10 articles systematically reviewed, 100% were of high quality as described below: 40% (n=4/10) were meta-analyses, and 60% (n=6/10) were randomized controlled trials. According to the data obtained from the systematic review conducted in this study, the countries of origin were China (30%), followed by the United States (20%), Spain (10%), New Zealand (10%), and Canada (10%). Results: Of the identified evidence, 100% indicate that Tai Chi exercise prevents and reduces falls in older adults. Conclusion: 10 out of 10 pieces of evidence indicate that Tai Chi exercise prevents and reduces falls in older adults. Additionally, 2 out of 10 pieces of evidence mention the risks of falls, 3 out of 10 discuss fall prevention, and 5 out of 10 discuss the reduction of falls with this exercise. Duration and frequency of practice are important factors, providing a protective effect by improving muscle strength and balance due to continuous practice, resulting in a 50% reduction in falls. Furthermore, Tai Chi contributes to recovery from diseases such as stroke (CVA) and facilitates timely reintegration into the community.
