Ítem Acceso abierto Retention of Volunteer Blood Donors at Cayetano Heredia Hospital, Experience at a Private University, 2012 - 2016(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2018-06-12) Vergaray Enriquez, Juan Carlos; León Sandoval, Segundo RamosIt is very important for voluntary blood donors in our country to be retained. Objective: The percentage of retained voluntary blood donors was determined. Materials and methods: Information was collected from the blood donor registration notebook of the hospital studied during the period 2012-2016, using a data collection form. The research is descriptive, retrospective, and cross-sectional. Main results: The percentage determined from a total population of 1,182 voluntary blood donors was classified according to their level of commitment. First place was for first-time donors (71.8%), second place for donors in the retention period (24.9%), third place for retained donors (3.3%), and finally, supporters and committed donors (0%). Conclusions: The determined percentage of retained voluntary blood donors is 3.3%, which does not exceed the estimated hypothesis goal (≥ 5%). On the other hand, it is evident that donors in the retention period with 2 to 4 donations represent 24.9% of potential future retained donors, and strategies should be established to maintain their participation and commitment as altruistic and retained voluntary donors in our country.
