Ítem Acceso abierto Effectiveness of an exercise program on the functionality of older adults, 2023(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2024-07-16) Yarasca Morote, Oshiro; Vera Arriola, Juan AméricoBy 2050, a significant increase in this population is expected, requiring preventive interventions to ensure quality of life. The reduction in daily activities and poor balance can lead to falls. The WHO urges health systems to adapt to the needs of older adults to prevent dependence. Functionality is a key health indicator, demanding preventive and therapeutic measures. The objective of this study was to determine the effectiveness of an exercise program on the functionality of older adults at a senior center in 2023. A quantitative, pre-experimental, correlational, and longitudinal study was conducted. The sample consisted of 90 older adults. The intervention consisted of a program with 4 progressive resistance exercises, performed three times a week for four weeks. The instruments used were the Barthel Index, Lawton and Brody Index, and the Tinetti Test. Results: The study included older adults with an average age of 75.64 years. There were more men (52.2%) and married individuals (64.4%). One-third had cardiovascular disease. Initially, there was mild dependence in basic activities (43.3%) and high independence in instrumental activities (63.3%). Poor balance was observed in 51.1%. At the end of the study, independence improved in both areas: 53.3% in basic activities and 75.6% in instrumental activities. Balance improved to 77.8%. Statistical analysis confirmed significant improvements (p < 0.05) in functionality and balance due to the exercise program. It was concluded that the proposed program is effective in improving the functionality of older adults.
