Polifarmacia y adherencia terapéutica en paciente adulto mayor con hipertensión arterial atendidos en el Hospital de Ventanilla Callao- 2024

As a general objective, this research considered determining the relationship between polypharmacy and therapeutic adherence in older adults with arterial hypertension treated at the Ventanilla – Callao hospital in 2024. In relation to its methodology, it revealed a hypothetical deductive method with a quantitative and basic approach. It had a non-experimental-cross sectional design with a correlational scope. The instrument was a questionnaire with 10 multiple choice questions and an 8 item Morisky-Green test. A survey was applied as a technique, while the sample was composed of 217 older adults. The results showed a high and significant positive correlation between polypharmacy and therapeutic adherence Rho 0.861, as well as with the behavioral Rho 0.803, cognitive Rho 0.807, and psychological Rho 0.811 dimensions. A moderate positive association was also found for polypharmacy and contextual barriers Rho 0.750. lastly, the relationship was high and positive for the number of medications, safety, and relevance of the medication with said adherence Rho 0.866. The conclusion stated that, in older adults, high polypharmacy leads to low therapeutic adherence, by virtue of the fact that, as the quantity of medication intake increases, the probability of the not correctly following their medical prescription is greater. Therefore, this polypharmacy is causing these older adults to have adverse reaction, medication exchanges, and even complications with their memory and ability to understand, hindering the respective adherence.
