Ítem Acceso abierto Peripheral muscle strength and respiratory muscle strength in older adults at the Santiago Elderly Care Center, Cusco, 2022(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2023-09-14) Zuniga Torres, Zhitall Anette; Diaz Mau, Aimee YajairaAccording to the World Health Organization (WHO), all people over 60 years of age are considered "elderly." Aging, as a natural deterioration that occurs over time, causes significant anatomical and physiological changes, such as a decrease in muscle strength. This is characterized by a generalized loss of skeletal muscle mass, reduced mobility, and, consequently, functional deterioration and decreased quality of life in the elderly. Worldwide, people lose approximately 30% of their muscle mass between the ages of 20 and 80, and this deterioration affects both the upper and lower extremities as well as respiratory muscles. Decreased respiratory muscle function may lead to clinical complications. The close relationship between peripheral and respiratory muscle strength will determine the maintenance of health in older adults. In Peru, studies show that 17.6% of older adults without any diseases have experienced a decrease in muscle mass over the last 10 years, and it is estimated that every decade starting at age 40 results in an 8% loss.
