The objective of this study was to determine the anxiolytic and antidepressant activity of the essential oil from the seeds of Foeniculum vulgare Mill., 'fennel,' in albino mice. Methodology: The methodology used was experimental, explanatory, quantitative, and applied. The seeds were collected in the province of Huarochirí (Matucana). The essential oil (EO) was extracted by hydrodistillation. The anxiolytic activity was evaluated using the marble burying method in 40 mice at oral doses of 2.5, 5, and 10 mL/kg of EO, compared to diazepam at 10 mg/kg. The antidepressant activity was evaluated using the forced swim test in 40 mice at oral doses of 2.5, 5, and 10 mL/kg of EO, compared to fluoxetine at 20 mg/kg. Results: The essential oil of Foeniculum vulgare showed antidepressant activity at the first two doses and anxiolytic activity at all three doses. Conclusion: The essential oil demonstrated antidepressant activity at doses of 2.5, 5, and 10 mL/kg and showed activity comparable to diazepam.Publicación Acceso abierto Actividad antimicótica "in vitro" del aceite esencial del fruto maduro de Schinus molle L. (molle) frente a cepa de Candida albicans ATCC 10231(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2019-07-09) Zambrano Ospinal, Agar Leonor; Jaramillo Briceño, Marilú RicardinaThis study was developed with the objective of evaluating the in vitro antifungal activity of the essential oil (EO) from the mature fruit of Schinus molle L. (Molle) against the Candida albicans ATCC 10231 strain. Methodology: The methodology used was experimental, explanatory, quantitative, and applied. The fruit was collected in the Huamanga province (Ayacucho). The essential oil (EO) was extracted by steam distillation. The antifungal activity was evaluated using the Kirby-Bauer method (disk diffusion). The strain was seeded on 18 plates with Sabouraud Dextrose Agar at a turbidity of 0.5 McFarland. The EO was evaluated at concentrations of 40%, 60%, 80%, and 100%, using Fluconazole 25 µg as a positive control and dimethyl sulfoxide as a negative control. The inhibition zones were measured with a digital vernier caliper at 24, 48, and 72 hours. Results: The EO of Schinus molle L. showed inhibition halos of 6 mm at 40 and 60%, 9.7 mm at 80%, and 12.3 mm at 100%. It is concluded that the EO at 40 and 60% presented no activity, but at 80 and 100% it presented antifungal activity against the Candida albicans ATCC 10231 strain.Publicación Acceso abierto Actividad antimicrobiana del aceite esencial de Origanum vulgare L. “orégano peruano” frente a Staphylococcus aureus(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2018-05-31) Salinas Segura, Roger; Carhuapoma Yance, MarioThe objective of this research was to confirm the antimicrobial activity of the essential oil of Origanum vulgare L., "Peruvian Oregano," against Staphylococcus aureus. The essential oil was obtained by steam distillation and purified with anhydrous sodium sulfate. The analysis of the main phytochemical components of the oil was performed using organoleptic and instrumental methods. The antimicrobial activity was assayed against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538 using the disk diffusion method (Kirby-Bauer), with Gentamicin 10 µg (OXOID brand) as the positive control and dimethyl sulfoxide as the negative control. Results: The essential oil had a good yield of 2.02%, distilled in 60 minutes, with a density of 0.9132 g/mL and a refractive index of 1.475. The main components were carvacrol and thymol. The essential oil of Origanum vulgare L. showed antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538, with inhibition halos of 11.47,13.40,16.60, and 19.65 mm at concentrations of 25,50,75, and 100 µg/mL, respectively. The gentamicin control resulted in an inhibition halo of 30.14 mm. Conclusion: The highest antimicrobial activity of the essential oil of Origanum vulgare L. "Peruvian Oregano" against Staphylococcus aureus was confirmed at 100 µg/mL.Publicación Acceso abierto Actividad repelente in vitro de los aceites esenciales de Syzygium aromaticum "clavo de olor" y Cinnamomum verum "canela" sobre Aedes Aegypti(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2022-05-13) Abanto Rojas, Rita Norma; Alvarez Torres, Eugenia Albertina; Chávez Flores, Juana ElviraThe objective of this study was to evaluate the in vitro repellent activity of the essential oils of Syzygium aromaticum ('clove') and Cinnamomum verum ('cinnamon') and a 50/50 v/v combination of both oils on Aedes aegypti. The essential oils were obtained by steam distillation, and the area preference method was used to evaluate repellent activity. The repellent activity of the essential oils and the 50/50 v/v combination was evaluated on the Aedes aegypti Rockefeller strain at various concentrations (0.2%, 0.1%, 0.05%, 0.03%, and 0.01%). N,N-diethyl-3-methylbenzamide (DEET) at 15% was used as a positive control, and acetone was used as a negative control. It was concluded that the essential oils of Syzygium aromaticum, Cinnamomum verum, and their combination do have in vitro repellent activity on Aedes aegypti. The minimum repellent concentration was 0.03%, and the repellency time was five (5) hours at concentrations of 0.05%, 0.1%, and 0.2%. Furthermore, the in vitro repellency level was found to be between class IV and V (using the Talukder and Howes rating) at the 0.05%, 0.1%, and 0.2% concentrations from the 1st to the 5th hour.Publicación Acceso abierto Determinación fitoquímica y actividad antimicrobiana del aceite esencial de los órganos aéreos de Lepechinia meyenii (Walp.) Epling "pacha salvia"(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2018-03-09) Quispe Silva, Mirela Magaly; Tenorio Roca, Eduardo; Carhuapoma Yance, MarioThe plant species Lepechinia meyenii (Walp.) Epling (commonly known as salvia, pacha salvia, salvia de puna, kotapuriña) is a native plant that grows in the southern Andean regions of Peru (Ayacucho, Huancavelica, Cuzco, and Puno). The main objective of the present study was to conduct a phytochemical evaluation and determine the antimicrobial activity of the essential oil obtained from the aerial parts of Lepechinia meyenii (Walp.) Epling “pacha salvia.” In the methodology, a gas chromatograph coupled with a mass spectrometer (GC-MS) was employed to determine the phytochemical composition, and the agar diffusion method (Kirby-Bauer) was used to evaluate antimicrobial activity. The results showed the presence of 31 components, with the major compounds being α-pinene (21.37%), eucalyptol (1,8-cineole = 18.80%), and D-limonene (15.43%). The essential oil demonstrated antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538 when compared with gentamicin 10 µg. It is concluded that the essential oil from the aerial parts of Lepechinia meyenii (Walp.) Epling “pacha salvia” contains active components with antimicrobial activity.
