Ítem Acceso abierto Cognitive impairment and socio-family support in the elderly attending the National Hospital Guillermo Almenara Irigoyen – Geriatrics Day Hospital.(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2013) Cerda Fernández, Janeth Roxana; Estrada Peralta, Giovanna Maribel; Mocarro Aguilar, María RosarioObjective: To determine the relationship between cognitive impairment and the level of socio-familial support in older adults attending the Day Hospital of Geriatrics. Methodology: A quantitative correlational research study. The population consisted of 368 older adults attended at the Day Hospital of Geriatrics from July to December 2012. The sample included 133 older adults who met the inclusion criteria. The instrument used for cognitive assessment was the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), which has a sensitivity of 80% and a specificity of 77.5%. For the socio-familial evaluation, the Gijón Geriatric Socio-Familial Assessment Scale was used, which has a sensitivity of 15.50% and a specificity of 99.80%. Results: Regarding cognitive assessment, based on demographic data, 53 individuals aged between 78 and 86 years with primary education had severe cognitive impairment, of which 67.9% were female. Regarding the socio-familial assessment, 65.4% had good social support. The association between cognitive impairment and socio-familial support was found to be statistically significant (p = 0.046). Conclusions: Cognitive impairment is related to the level of familial support, as greater socio-familial support is associated with less cognitive impairment in older adults attending the Day Hospital of Geriatrics at Guillermo Almenara Irigoyen National Hospital between July and December 2012.
