Effectiveness of alternative disinfectants: peracetic acid and ortho-phthalaldehyde compared to glutaraldehyde for achieving optimal and damage-free disinfection in flexible endoscopes
(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2018-08-25) Alvarez Avalos, Hiozime; Matta Solis, Hernán Hugo
Objective: To systematically analyze the evidence on the effectiveness of alternative disinfectants: peracetic acid and ortho-phthalaldehyde compared to glutaraldehyde for achieving optimal and damage-free disinfection of flexible endoscopes. Materials and Methods: Systematic review of 06 articles from international studies and research, including the most relevant ones according to the level of evidence, restricted to full-text articles. Of the 06 articles reviewed systematically, 50% are systematic reviews, 33% are controlled clinical trials, and 16% are experimental studies. The articles underwent critical reading using the GRADE scale. Results: Of the 60% of reviewed articles, 20% demonstrate that the disinfectants studied are effective in inactivating vegetative microorganisms under the established conditions of use, 20% of the articles demonstrate that preconditions are important for ensuring proper disinfection, and 30% of articles indicate that the use of ortho-phthalaldehyde, like glutaraldehyde and peracetic acid, has been cited in relation to its toxicity, making it unsafe as an alternative. No studies were found reporting damage to endoscopes caused by the disinfectants. Conclusions: Of the 06 articles reviewed, it is evident that the disinfectants peracetic acid and ortho-phthalaldehyde are effective in inactivating microorganisms. Preconditions must exist to ensure proper disinfection. The disinfectants have been cited for their toxicity, and no studies report damage to endoscopes.

Efficacy of equipment and furniture surface disinfectants in reducing contamination and preventing infections
(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 1905-07-09) Lindo Véliz, Maribel Lilia; Rosas Cayetano, Jackie Myrian; Gómez Gonzales, Walter Edgar
Objective: Determine the effectiveness of surface disinfectants on equipment and furniture in reducing contamination and preventing infections. Materials and Methods: Systematic Reviews are an experimental quantitative research design, the population is made up of the bibliographic review of 4 scientific articles published and indexed in scientific databases, all of them are of high quality. Results: In the systematic review, the comparison study of hypochlorite against quaternary ammonium, hydrogen peroxide, povidone-iodine, 4% chlorhexidine is observed, hypochlorite showing superior disinfection action on surfaces. In the second article reviewed, the disinfectant effectiveness of 70% alcohol is demonstrated when applied directly to contaminated surfaces, observing a microbial reduction. From the third article, it is observed that hypochlorous acid is 100% effective on surfaces. From the fourth article, it is concluded that hydrogen peroxide and acetic acid are effective for cleaning surfaces. Conclusions: The reviewed articles show that sodium hypochlorite showed superior action in disinfecting furniture surfaces compared to 70% alcohol, quaternary ammonium, hydrogen peroxide, hypochlorous acid, peracetic acid, but it is necessary to consider its toxicity and corrosion during the use.
